Whilst retaining the structure and target audience of my earlier Update 97 web site, this was a total redesign in function and appearance. A strong point of the previous design was that it enabled the user to find more detailed information as needed, by clicking links or rollovers that triggered secondary frames. However, it was too much effort to maintain, and wasn't sufficiently robust across browsers and platforms. Furthermore, though you could see all the news/software items available on a given page, there was less chance of uncovering interesting items by scanning the text. The new design uses a more detailed Contents page to hint at what is contained within the site. There is still a definite split between the news Summary and the software archives, but they now use similar layout and interactions like the coloured rollover-scrollbar in the top frame. The Summary page (bottom left) now presents all the text at once, and uses carefully selected links to describe the content on a higher visual level. It's now much easier to read, and also easier to produce. I was motivated and inspired to redesign my site after reading Jeffrey Veen's book "HotWired Style" - one of the only decent Web design books in existence at the time. |
