I chose the household fridge as a vehicle to explore the theme of people's movement through time and space, leveraging certain inherent qualities and augmenting them with new meanings. The fridge often plays a very important role in the home as a food storage device. In some households, people don't always see each other because they aren't in at the same time, so they leave messages for one another. Often in these circumstances, the prominence of the fridge affords its usage as a message board. This is how the fridge transcends time, allowing people to communicate through it asynchronously. I took the communication aspect into the visual realm by using still video images. This opened up new ways of communicating - especially non-verbally. The system behind my design was very simple: every time someone opened the fridge door, a camera inside would take a snapshot of them. The image would then be shown moments later on a display mounted in the front of the freezer door. The display would also show recent images, as well as a cycling archive of all images taken. On the surface level, many people found it to be a fun and easy way to take pictures of themselves and see the results almost instantly. However, it is probably less obvious that people were actually communicating when they did this. They took time to compose themselves, expressing things facially and gesturally, as well as unconsciously by their stance, clothes and mere presence. By seeing the previous images, people would know that they would be seen by the people after them. This was by far the most lengthy and detailed project of my MA course - as well as the most challenging. It encompassed many of the ideas I had explored on the course and allowed me to make a fully working physical system that people could interact with. |
