Schedule Screen-based Design

Visual representation of event schedules.

Schedule - Tuesday

Schedule - Friday

The aim of this project was to explore solutions for providing a projected computer-based schedule for the CRD studio. Focusing on visual representations and user interactions, the general aim was to find alternative ways of showing a schedule of events to a traditional grid-based calendar.

I chose to explore the possibilities of representing events as objects. Many non-explicit visual means were used to convey information, such as light, motion, and perspective. The concept built on the user becoming familiar with the "language", or narrative "life-cycle", of the objects (centre sequence) and their arrangement in space (far left).

The same basic object was used throughout, but scaled, positioned, and animated in different ways. Event information relating to timing, duration, individual involvement, and contextual progress were mapped to object attributes. For instance, by looking at the resolution of an object (how fine its constituent segments were), one automatically gained a sense of how far a project had progressed. The design incorporated other subtle changes, such as the perspective change over the course of a week.

It was a challenge to realise all of the parameters in a visual language. At some point this concept would need some explicit information to make it totally usable, but it certainly made me appreciate the potential of non-verbal communication.
